Learned Mediocrity - Jen's Weekly Standard Issue 1
I WENT FOR A JOG THIS MORNING. And the whole time I was thinking about Ron Burgundy, not gonna lie.
I'm trying this new fad called "starting small" and just doing the thing, after a very long time spent thinking I need to do everything super well. You just don't.
I call it "learned mediocrity" and I actually made a video about it a few years back. (It's super old school.) Basically, high standards can totally mess with you and your goals, so sometimes you gotta try and go medium instead of large. It's a learned skill that will serve you well if you want to show up and take more chances.
I jogged for 12 minutes this morning, and it was enough to make me sweat a bit, get my blood moving, and invigorate me for a solid work day. I heard something really smart on the internet last week, from a chick named Laura Belgray who I love:
That's some solid sense right there.
I've gained a lot of perspective from my health crisis. I feel like I'm rebuilding myself and my physicality from the ground up, and not only is it super humbling, but it's also kinda fun. I don't have all these crazy expectations of myself.
I wrote a quick health update here on my new blog because I'm showing up more online, and a lot of people have been asking me if I'm all better. I'm not 100% yet, but I sure am feeling good. Now my skin just needs to catch up, which I'm sure it will... but I'm not going to let it stop me. 💪🏼
I'll leave you with that for today, friend. Wherever you are, whatever you're up to, and whatever you're dealing with... you don't need to do an amazing job. In fact, a lot of the time people whose standards are too high don't get shit done. That's the truth.
Here's to learned mediocrity, a 12-minute jog, and doing the thing even though you might not be ready or it might not be awesome. You can still do it. And god it feels good to knock things off that list. ☑️
Rooting for you.
P.S. I've been listening to this YouTube channel lately while I write and work, and it's amazing. No words. Just some funky beats the kids are listening to these days called "Lo-Fi". Enjoy. 🎶
P.P.S. The Weekly Standard is my new newsletter. It's a weekly update / inspiration for living a healthy, balanced life without being weird about it. We'll talk about being cool with food, enjoying life more, mindfulness and meditation, and breaking patterns that f*ck with your flow.
